Herbs can be used in many forms. Using herbs fresh for salads, adding them in cooking , or brewing tea are the most common ways to consume them. Other forms include dried herbs & spices also for cooking and a way to preserve herbs for later use when the season for using them fresh has passed. Herbs are also used as healing remedies and are often preserved as tinctures, extracts, capsules, syrups, salves, oils, sprays, poultices, essential oils(aromatherapy), homeopathics or flower essences. Before pharmaceuticals, herbs were used for their healing properties in many cultures.
Flower Essence Therapy is the herbal healing modality that I use the most in my business. Dr. Edward Bach, a British Physician, discovered this therapy in the 1920’s and 1930’s. He noticed a gap in the medical field that didn’t address the thoughts and emotions of the patient that he believed to be part of the dis-ease process. He believed that illness is the effect of disharmony between body and mind. He determined that nature had the answer in the form of flowers and created this healing system that could help with all aspects of an illness called Flower Essence Therapy.
What is a Flower Essence and How are they used?
It is a liquid extract that is taken orally to address issues of emotional well-being, soul development and mind-body health. They are made from sun infused wild flower or organic flowers in water and then preserved. After you or your practitioner have determined the flower(s) that are appropriate for you, a typical dosage is 2-4 drops, 2-4 times per day. It is best to sit quietly for a few minutes to absorb the benefits of the blend. The optimal times to ingest the flower essences is upon awakening, near lunch, near supper and just before bedtime. Regular and rhythmic use builds the strength of the catalytic action.
How do you choose a flower essence and What conditions benefit from this therapy?
Dr. Bach created a questionnaire and wrote several books including: Heal Thyself and The Twelve Healers on this subject. Richard Katz and Patricia Kaminski wrote Flower Essence Repertory which lists healing themes and qualities of each flower essence. Another herbalist, Steven Horne, has his own method of using flower essences. I have studied each of these methods and completed a Masters in Herbalism program to be able to assist you in choosing an appropriate blend.
